Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry is a crucial branch of dental care that focuses on the unique dental needs of children and adolescents, from infancy to young adulthood. This field of dentistry emphasizes prevention, education, and early intervention to ensure the optimal oral health and development of young patients, and help them establish lifelong dental habits. With its child-friendly approach, advanced techniques, and compassionate care, pediatric dentistry can create a positive and rewarding dental experience for kids, fostering trust, confidence, and a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Pediatric Dentistry
Children Dentistry

We use different techniques for the preservation of milk teeth and permanent teeth in babies and children up to 15 years of age. Dental health starts in infancy.

Pedodontics, that is, paediatric dentistry, deals with the prevention and cure of oral problems in children from birth until the root development of permanent teeth is complete. Additionally, they are well trained in children’s psychology and promote children`s oral health by assisting both infants and parents.

What do dentists do for children?

Pediatric dentists are devoted to the oral health of children from infancy through the teen years. They’ve got the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, epoxies, and mouth throughout the various stages of childhood. Children begin to get their baby teeth during the first 6 months of life.

By age 6 or 7, they start to lose their first set of teeth, which are ultimately replaced by secondary, endless teeth. Children aren’t just little grownups. They aren’t always willing to be patient and collaborative during a dental test. Pediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable. In addition, paediatric dentists use specially designed services that are arranged and decorated with children in mind.

What age should you bring a kid to the dentist?

Many parents don’t realise that babies and toddlers can get cavities, but they can and do. As soon as your child gets a tooth, that tooth can begin to decay. This is why it’s so important to schedule a dental scan for your baby when that first tooth comes in.

Isn’t it too early to take my child to the dentist at the age of 1?

Most babies start getting teeth around 6 months of age. According to the American Dental Association, children should see a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth. Still, they shouldn’t stay until they’re over 12 months old for their first dental appointment. If your child hasn’t gotten a tooth by the time they’re 1 year old, bring them in for a dental exam anyway.

Tooth decay affects nearly 1 in 5 children under the age of 5. By catching any developing conditions early, your dental professional will be able to diagnose and treat them effectively. They will do what they can to ensure your baby is set up to have a healthy smile for life. Your paediatric dentist will be able to check for tooth decay, injuries, and other issues during your visit and will be able to track changes in your baby’s mouth as they age.

Dental Treatment with General Anesthesia and Sedation in Children in Pediatric Dentistry in Turkey

General anaesthesia is a type of anaesthesia in which a state of narcosis is achieved by administering intravenous drugs and/or stun gas to the patient. Sedation, on the other hand, is anaesthesia in which the patient is sometimes given intravenous medications and sometimes oral medications to ensure a state of calm. The most important point here is the adjustment of the level of sedation. The application of sedation should be conscious sedation in such a way that the patient’s breathing is not compromised, taking into account the application of the treatment performed inside the mouth. Deep sedation can cause more harm than good. Therefore, general anaesthesia instead of deep sedation is considered much safer. In addition, sedation has no drug effect, so patients are also given local anaesthesia to numb the area to be operated on. We want six hours of hunger and thirst before the procedure when we use general anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry treatments in Antalya, Turkey. For sedation application, according to age, we want hunger and thirst for 4 or 5 hours before the procedure.

How Do You Teach Children to Brush Their Teeth?

Teaching children good toothbrushing habits matters. More than 40 percent of kids have cavities before they begin kindergarten, and tooth decay is the top ailment in young children. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it occurs five times as often as asthma and seven times more than common allergies. But a child’s teeth aren’t permanent. It takes three years for a complete set of 20 “baby teeth” to come in. By the time they are 12 or 13, these primary teeth have fallen out in place of adult, permanent teeth.

If a kid is going to lose their baby teeth anyway, does it matter if they brush regularly?

Yes, as it turns out. Baby teeth are vital for proper oral formation. They act as guides for permanent adult teeth, and if they fall out prematurely, adult teeth may not have enough room to come in correctly. Young children don’t have the fine motor skills necessary to brush and floss their own teeth effectively. While not one of the most fun ways to teach kids to brush their teeth, it is necessary for the first few years.

https://dinamik.yoursmileturkey.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/pediatric-dentistry-before-after.webp

As you floss or brush your baby’s teeth, explain what you’re doing aloud. Yes, it can feel silly narrating, but talking through what you’re doing and why will build the foundation, and you might be surprised at how much your child internalizes.

Kids are often forgetful, but they’re also creatures of habit (just like grownups!). The easiest way to help your child make oral hygiene a part of their routine is to tie it to other activities they do every day without thinking about it: getting dressed or undressed, getting in or out of the tub or shower, eating breakfast, or having dessert.

    Kids
    Dental Problems?

What are the most common dental problems in kids?

Many of a kid’s dental problems are the same ones that affect adults, but your child’s teeth are still developing, and they’re softer and younger than their permanent successors. Untreated dental conditions can cause poor and misaligned tooth development, leading to more serious problems as a child grows up.

Here are the 10 most common dental problems for kids, along with how to prevent them from developing.

      1. Tooth Decay (Cavities)

Tooth decay is a very common dental problem across the country and the entire world among children and even adults. When bacteria build up on teeth, it becomes plaque, which eats away at the enamel, leading to cavities. Luckily, tooth decay is preventable with regular brushing and flossing. not to mention a healthy diet that limits sugary foods and carbohydrates that contribute to cavities.

      1. Tooth Sensitivity

If your child experiences discomfort from hot or cold foods or air, he or she may have sensitive teeth. Older people aren’t the only ones prone to tooth sensitivity; children can also get it because of their thinner enamel, which is susceptible to wearing down faster from plaque. To fix this, your paediatric dentist can apply sealants to the affected areas. These will fill in any cracks while strengthening the enamel. It’s important to always use a soft toothbrush so as not to scrape off the enamel.

      1. Dental Emergencies

For kids that play baseball, soccer, basketball, and other sports, it is not uncommon to run into dental issues due to injury. Chipped, broken, loosened, and knocked-out teeth can occur in accidents. Generally, loosened and knocked-out teeth are not a large concern if they are baby teeth (or primary teeth), as adult teeth will come in. But chipped or otherwise damaged teeth require emergency dental work.

      1. Gum Disease

Gum diseases are also called periodontal diseases. Gingivitis is a type of gum disease where plaque and tartar gather at the base of the tooth and distress the gums. Initially, the child’s gums may look red and inflamed and bleed while brushing and flossing.

      1. Orthodontic Problems

Children rarely have perfectly straight teeth without any intervention. Luckily, there are many orthodontic treatments available to help your child or teen smile with confidence. Orthodontic problems are often a result of genetics, with the size and shape of the jaw playing a role in how your child’s teeth grow and come together.

      1. Excessive Thumb Sucking

When babies, many children develop the habit of sucking their thumbs or fingers. It is acceptable to have this habit for a baby or infant because it provides a sense of comfort and security. However, if this practise continues in childhood, it has a wide range of consequences for the development of permanent teeth.

Thumb sucking can disrupt normal oral development, affecting tooth alignment and the roof of the mouth.Strong and intense thumb sucking can cause damage to temporary and permanent tooth structures. If children persist in thumb-sucking well into their fifth year, your dentist may suggest ways to break the habit and provide support.

      1. Grinding

Children are prone to teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. This could occur because of tooth misalignment, a pain response, or stress. Bruxism usually doesn’t require treatment, but if it continues, both primary and secondary teeth could wear away. Common symptoms are jaw pain, headaches, and sensitivity. Your paediatric dentist can prescribe a nightguard to buffer the grinding each night.

      1. Bad Breath

We all have bad breath, or halitosis, from time to time. However, if your child’s bad breath continues throughout the day, there is most likely a deeper issue. Bad breath comes from a buildup of bacteria in the mouth that feeds on leftover food and plaque and emits smelly hydrogen sulfide. Halitosis has a variety of causes, including dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, digestive issues, and even certain medications. The best way to prevent bad breath is to practise good dental hygiene and schedule regular teeth cleanings with your child’s dentist.

      1. Baby tooth Loss

Around the age of six, the first front middle tooth generally loosens and falls out. It is a natural process without serious pain that happens over the course of about 5 to 7 years. By the time the child is about 13 years old, But sometimes the tooth does not fall out. When a tooth falls out prematurely or does not fall out at all, the dentist should be consulted.Overretained teeth also affect permanent teeth. It is best to see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent permanent teeth from crowding and becoming misaligned.

      1. Baby Teeth Not Loosening
Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out, also called over-retained primary teeth. Usually, this happens because there is no permanent tooth to replace the baby tooth. Other possible causes include jaw misalignment, obstructions, damage, infection, and oral pathology. If left untreated, over-retained teeth could cause dental problems like decay. Luckily, your child’s dentist can remove the baby tooth so the adult tooth can develop unhindered. Any misalignment can be treated with orthodontics.

When Should a Child Begin Brushing His Teeth?

Start brushing as soon as a child’s first tooth erupts in the mouth. The first tooth erupts at an average age of 6-7 months. Most children should be able to brush their own teeth between the ages of 6 and 9. This is when children have the dexterity to handle the task and the maturity to understand instructions. You may still need to guide your child through the process for several months, but you can start transitioning to solo brushing around this time.

What Should Families Do About Nutrition?

With today’s busy lifestyles, families don’t always eat as healthfully as we would like. By practising healthy eating habits at home, you can make it easier for your family to eat right. Try these 10 tips designed to encourage healthy eating habits:

          • Be a good food model. Telling children to eat nutritious foods is one thing. Showing them is better.
          • Serve a variety of fruits and vegetables daily.
          • Schedule a snack time and stick to it. Space snacks at least two to three hours before a meal.
          • Involve kids in meal planning and preparation. Children frequently consume foods that they helped plan and prepare.
          • Keep less-healthful foods on a higher shelf where they won’t be noticed as much.
          • Eat as a family. If possible, eat together at least once a day. If it’s breakfast, set the table the night before for less effort in the morning.
          • Don’t eat in front of the TV.
          • Encourage your family to try new foods, expanding your knowledge, experience, and skills.
          • Let kids stop eating when they say they’re full. Encourage your child to eat slowly and pay attention to feeling full. By learning hunger and fullness cues, your child will learn to eat enough but not overeat.
          • Eat around a table and enjoy your meal. Avoid arguing or complaining at the table. A stress-free meal that is neither rushed nor prolonged promotes family bonding and helps everyone enjoy what they’re eating.
